31 Days of “Out of the Box” Genealogy Tips – Google Books

July 2018 is completely focused on providing you with genealogy tips that are …..well,….”out of the box”.

Welcome to DAY 30 of the 31 Days of “Out of the Box” Genealogy Tips series! Need to start at the beginning of the series or catch up? Start here.

DAY 30- Explore Google Books

Google books is a fantastic resource for finding books helpful in your genealogy  and family history research.

Did I mention many of these books are FREE?!  That makes a frugal genealogist’s heart happy. Books that are in the public domain  are offered for free access. Others you may just get a preview snippet.

A variety of books can be found. Take a quick peek back at the type of books found on Google books I have used:

  • Family histories
  • Church histories
  • City directories
  • County histories
  • A law dictionary (It’s important to understand the legal terms found in the documents we read.)
  • State statute books
  • Indices to state and county records

A similar free resource for books (albeit harder to access) is Hathi Trust. There’s some overlap, but I’ve found lots of family history books on their site.
