31 Days of “Out of the Box” Genealogy Tips – Cultural Periodicals

July 2018 is completely focused on providing you with genealogy tips that are …..well,….”out of the box”.

Welcome to DAY 8 of the 31 Days of “Out of the Box” Genealogy Tips series! Need to start at the beginning of the series or catch up? Start here.

DAY 8 – Use Cultural Periodicals!

America is a melting pot and our ancestors brought their traditions and way of life with them. They lived together, did business together and worshiped together. They created newspapers and other printed materials.

As researchers, we want – we need! – to include these cultural resources in our research.

Chronicling America is a great place to start your search! From the home page, search for newspapers by state, ethnicity or by language.

Using cultural periodicals in your genealogy research

Are you researching your Irish ancestors in Kentucky? Select “Kentucky” for your state and “Irish” for the Ethnicity.  Click “Enter” and you’re in luck. The Kentucky Irish American  is available for you to research.

Explore Chronicling America or your local archives and libraries for those cultural periodicals.
